Years and years ago I used to get a rag called "Mother Earth News". These days they call it the "Journal Of Living Wisely" (it used to be the journal of self sufficiency), which it pretty much is, although at times in their history they have ruined the ride by injecting their politics into wisdom.
To be fair, not all self sufficient types are "greenies". I know a guy who is to the right of me who uses active solar heating in his house, cracks his own biodiesel, and doesn't give too much of a rat's ass about what the left says, because it seems like every time the left co-opts some cause they fuck it up, and the self sufficiency movement was one of the places they had to start injecting their environmentalist crap, and other political matters, which I will get to in a minute.
Personally, I have never believed that I can save the environment. I don't believe I can destroy it, either. That said, I don't throw trash out of my car, pour paint or oil down the drain, or the like. However, I don't wash out glass bottles and throw them in a blue bin because I know damn well that when they get to the dump they go into the same pile as the rest of the trash. How do I know that? Because I have seen it.
Anyway, I have never been part of what the rabid leftists who have never been outside of Seattle call "environmentalism". What I am into is "cheap", and if things keep going the way they have been, I'll start cracking my own biodiesel, too.
That said, back in the early days of Mother Earth News the used to bitch about "Big Agriculture" in the same way they talk about "Big Oil" now. I don't recall them ever mentioning names but I am sure they were talking about Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland. Let it suffice to say that "Agribiz" was the bad guy then.
When you think about where the illegals are going to work, though, where are 40% of them going for jobs? Agribiz. But now Agribiz must be okay with the left because they employ illegals, the next big voting bloc, or so the Demolibs think.
Never mind that Agribiz was the bad guy a few years ago. Never mind that hiring illegals into American business is in direct conflict to the unions. And the whole notion that business exists to provide a public service not only to the population at large but also to it's workers is blown from the water. Paying low wages to illegals enables Agribiz and other industries to (gasp) make a profit.
And if you make too much profit, you're price gouging...
