I've had many an argument with other NFL fans over the past few months over the Peyton Manning situation in Indianapolis.
Most of these fans have maintained that Peyton still has a few years left in him and with the Colts likely to draft Stanford's Andrew Luck with the first overall pick it would make sense to keep Peyton on and allow Luck to take a year or two to learn under Peyton. With Aaron Rodgers recent success they figure it makes sense, and it does if one ignores the reality that is the salery cap. Aaron Rodgers was not planned to be drafted by the Packers. They got lucky. People drastically overlooked Aaron Rodgers and rather than being a top ten pick where he had been projected to go, he slipped all the way to 24 where the Packers realised they could draft their future QB, pay him a lower salery than a top pick would demand and give him a few years to develop behind Brett Favre.
Unfortunately for Peyton Manning he has a massive contract and when the Colts presumably draft Andrew Luck he will demand and huge salery himself. It's not likely the organization will be willing to pay that much to a player sitting on the sideline and with Peyton having such a huge contract he will likely be released or traded in order to clear the way for the Luck era to begin.
The question then becomes where will Peyton eventually go? Dolphin fans in Miami have made they desire for Manning known by erecting a billboard on the main interstate into Miami. The Dolphins wouldn't be too bad of a fit either. Reggie Bush finally had a decent year in his first year with the team, Brandon Marshall has the ability to be one of the best receivers in the game so long as his head is also in the game and the defense sports one of the better covarage teams in the league. Still, with former Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin becoming head coach I'd think the safe money on the next Miami QB would be current Green Bay back up Matt Flynn.
Other teams with a QB need where Peyton may end up are as follows, Seattle, Cleveland, and Washington.
Washington always likes to spend money and in this scenario they could gain a QB that is destined to go the hall of fame. Peyton to the Redskins would also give the NFL a dream of dream with at least two Manning Vs Manning games a year, but with a suspect receiving corps and shaky defense is questionable how willing Peyton would be to going to Washington. Also considering Donovan McNabb's flop two years ago what would really be the Redskin's desire to bring in another aging QB.
Cleveland has a young developing QB in Colt McCoy whom I'd like to see Cleveland continue to develop. The kid has a strong arm and a competitive streak strong enough to make the Browns competitive if they continue to focus building around him. As it is though, the rumor has it the Browns with the 5th overall pick in the draft will select QB Robert Griffin III. Griffin is an exciting prospect but I think it's taking a step back in the developiong process for a club, and also puts them in the awkward position of eventually having to unload Colt McCoy. Peyton Manning coming to Cleveland under these circumstances, with Griffin or not, is unlikely.
Seattle makes a lot of sense to me. They clearly don't have a definitive starter but do have a large fan base and the tools to be competitive in a weak devision, whether or not they actually make the move will remain to be seen.
Anyway, that's what I got, how bout y'all?
