...ment" a little too far? ............................... OSLO - Those expecting Anders Behring Breivik to spend the rest of his days alone in a cramped cell will be disappointed when the far-right fanatic receives his sentence Friday for killing 77 people in a bomb and gun rampage last year. If declared insane, the confessed killer will be the sole patient of a psychiatric ward that Norway built just for him, with 17 people on staff to treat him. If found mentally fit, he will remain isolated, for now, in the high-security prison where he disposes of three 86-square-foot (8-square-meter) cells: a bed room, an exercise room and a study. Officials at Oslo's Ila Prison say the ambition would be to eventually transfer Breivik to a section with other prisoners, who have access to a school that teaches from primary grades through university-level courses, a library, a gym, work in the prison's various shops and other leisure activities. It's all about a philosophy of humane prison treatment and rehabilitation that forms the bedrock of the Scandinavian penal system. "I like to put it this way: He's a human being. He has human rights. This is about creating a humane prison regime," said Ellen Bjercke, a spokeswoman for Ila (EE-luh) Prison. ........... During his trial, Breivik, 33, coolly described how he set off a car bomb that killed eight people and injured scores in Oslo's government district on July 22 last year. Then he unleashed a shooting rampage that left 69 people dead, mostly teenagers, at the summer camp of the governing Labor Party's youth wing. The youngest victim was 14. news.yahoo.com/norway-promises-humane-conditions-mass-killer-ahead-sentencing-170048111.html

No kidding.
Humane treatment just means you aren't physically abusing the man.
There's nothing inhumane about a 5x9 cell with a bed and toilet.

Norway is one of those "socially advanced nations" which gave up the death penalty and life imprisonment even for the most violent criminals, something too many here want us to emulate. 21 years maximum, possibly less than half that will see this rabid wolf set loose among the sheep again.
Screw that. Get a rope. I'm sure Norway has trees that are up to the job.

He'll "confined" to a bedroom, and exercise room, and a study. The dude is doing his prison time in the equivilant of a friggn single bedroom apartment. That's just insane. -DD

Europe has been developing into a continent size loonie bin for decades DD, and there are many on this side of the Atlantic who want us to go the same way.
Call me a caveman if you want, but I'm strongly of the opinion that criminals should be punished and violent criminals should be removed from society, permanently where appropriate. I'm strongly of the opinion that Breivik would look good swinging from a tree, feet twitching and I suspect many of the families of his victims would too.

There are generally three elements in Europe. You have the left and right and rising thrird which is extreme right like neonazi's. What is happening in Europe that people seem to be tired of both left and right and they like robot cast their vote automatically or they stay home. Both left and right are affraid of neo-nazi's because they are on the rise. It is the same economic problem which Obama is trying to do in the US. In France Etreme right movement gain coupkle seats and it won't be long when we will in other countries parlaments have the extreme right wing present. The extreme right could go away, if jobs are available.
