Brit Huem mentioned this on "The Grapevine" so I did a quick search:
U.N. to look into U.S. prison ship charges
LONDON, June 29 (UPI) -- A special U.N. investigator says the United Nations will look into allegations the United States secretly detained terror suspects on U.S. military ships.
Manfred Nowak told the BBC the allegations come from reliable sources*. The alleged prison ships are believed in the Indian Ocean, he said.
Nowak called the allegations serious and urged the United States to cooperate with investigators.
The comments come just five days after the United Nations accused the United States of stalling U.N. requests to examine the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention camp for human rights abuses.
Nowak said the request was made more than a year ago and there has been no response from Washington.

*These allegations were levied by Amnesty International which apparently has lost it’s organizational mind. They make the allegation that the US Navy is running “secret prison ships” in the Indian Ocean but made no effort to offer any evidence or details.
Maybe this is an effort at payback by AI, if so it’s a damn poor one.

Expert says UN looking for secret US detention facilities

Vienna, June 29, 2005
UN human rights experts have begun an investigation into US detention facilities for terrorist suspects and allegations that there are secret prisons, one of the project leaders said on Wednesday.
Manfred Nowak, the UN's special expert on torture, said some undeclared holding areas could include US Navy ships cruising extraterritorial waters. He said there were "serious" allegations to that effect from Amnesty International and other non-governmental human rights groups.
"I have heard these rumours and we have to follow them up," he said, urging the US government to cooperate with the investigation.
Nowak, a Vienna law professor, is one of several independent human rights experts appointed by the 53-nation UN Human Rights Commission, the United Nations' top rights watchdog.
Nowak, who also reports to the UN General Assembly, has great autonomy in deciding what to investigate and did not need to seek outside approval in launching the probe into US detention practices and locations.
The United States has criticized the commission because its members include countries with poor human rights records. But the experts operate independently and sometimes reproach their own countries for violations.
He said he and three fellow-experts decided last week to launch the inquiry without waiting for assurances of US cooperation after holding off for more than three years in hopes Washington would give members access to Guantanamo Bay and other facilities holding terrorist suspects.

Correction - It IS an attempt at payback through the use of slander.
Someone remind me again ... Why are we part of this organization?
