I have a buddy in Iraq right now who is stationed around the Baghdad area. Obviously, yesterday night was a busy day for them. they were in a large firefight with insurgents.
After it ended, with zero US casualties, the next morning they drove back into the Mullah where the insurgents are supported. He said they were driving down a street (compared it to Canal street in NYC with smaller buildings and less people.) they turned the corner and the street was crowded as people were trying to escape the mid-day heat in there houses. As they drove down the street he noticed there were only men and teenage boys outside. These people glared at them and made some distinctly negative gestures. At which point he said he stood a little higher in his humvee turret to show them that they US was indeed back in the neighborhood. At that point all of a sudden doors opened and young children came running out of there houses, pushing passed the older men. They were screaming at the convoy that they loved them and "hello Mr number 1." He said the men in the platoon emptied their pockets of candy, dollar bills, anything that the kids would enjoy. The kids followed them for blocks running around laughing and smiling and having a wonderful time. He also noticed young women on the balconies waving, smiling and blowing kisses (apparently a very flurtatious gesture there.) He asked the interpreter why the women didnt come down? The response was that they were too used to the old regimes normal acts of raping the best looking women in the mullahs if they count them out in the street.
After a tough night he said it was a very rewarding way to end the day.
You certainly dont hear about this type of behavior in the press, and yet some people continue, who are biased and take an extremely short term view, to rant and rave that the "situation" in Iraq is deteriorating. Posted this at THC too, Im sure the muppets will either tell me Im lying and that I dont know anyone there or they will tell me about the "real situation" which they put together sitting behind their computers in London and NYC.
