One of the first major battles between the Japanese and the Americans took place in the summer of 1942 after the Allied forces identified a Japanese airfield under construction on the island of Guadalcanal. Some 16,000 US Marines made an amphibious landing to capture the airfield. For half a year both the Japanese and Allied forces had occupied different sections of the island as Japanese ground forces launched attack after attack on US positions in order to retake the island.
