Just to give you an idea of where this took place, looking at the map to the right of the story, south of Kabul is Ghazni, the letter "i" is in Khost Provence. Khost makes up most of that "bulge" into Pakistan and is thought of as a "Wild west" kind of area. The Afghan troops are in contact there on a regular basis, encountering Taliban/AQ scum coming from Pakistan. It'a a real rugged area. We have 2 FOBs there, about 40-50 miles apart. It can take all day to drive from one to the other.
