In my class on depression, we are discussing depression and suicide. According to the CDC, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US in 2002.
Deaths 2002:
Heart Disease: 696,947
Cancer: 557,271
Stroke: 162,672
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,816
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 106,742
Diabetes: 73,249
Influenza/Pneumonia: 65,681
Alzheimer's disease: 58,866
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis (Kidney): 40,974
Septicemia: 33,865
Suicides: 31,655
Hey Toe and Packer, you are in the group at the top of the list! Ok so I’m in the second group. Big deal!
I then wanted to see if the rates were different for the military and came across the following DOD site Military Casualty Information: web1.whs.osd.mil/mmid/casualty/castop.htm.
It has the death of every major us military engagement and annual deaths. Suicide ranks a little higher in the military. Two major things jumped at me and they speak directly to this conflict and the perceptions given by the Left.
1980 US Military personal active duty and reservist. 4,210,328 (deaths from all causes 2362)
2002 US Military personal active duty and reservist. 2,975,266 (deaths from all causes 1967)
We are attempting to do a larger function with fewer personnel. I.e. the percentage of combat related causalities have increased, though the numbers have decreased.
Another big question, what was the military action in 1987 that cost the lives of 36 USA personnel?
A report from the SecDef to USSenate in 2001 stated that in 2000, Clinton's last year of peace. 187 Combat actions in 119 Countries with 26 KIA and 89 WIA. How many of these actions were "BlackOps" where the Sovereign Nation had no idea we were there? Were these drug interdiction activities?
