Heya Sailor! HEll yeah the NAVY! Rofl the army is cheap, would only give me there version of BIG bonus.. their version=40k....ROFl poor lil army... no im jk. and Air Force? i live and breathe Air Force... ugh. No navy all teh way, i love swimming and the water too much. Stationed at Great Lakes for training soon. Haven't been through Boot yet? Kiddo, I don't know if you are from that area but trust me, January at Great Mistakes is absolutely miserable COLD! I had to put in 4 years on staff there after making First Class. Cold and snow out the wazzoo. Boots doing the Manual of Arms with snow shovels. Not to worry. They'll keep you so busy you won't have time to feel the cold and will warm you up with a week of fire fighting training about half way through. With your attitude you'll do fine. I'd think you'd be used to the snow since your from Michigan Sailor. From what I remember of that place was that it was the coldest Augest I'd ever seen I really don't want to imagine what it's like in the real winter months.

I'm FROM Michigan, grew up in some nasty winter weather. That doesn't mean I like it. Immediately prior to my tour at Great Mistakes I had spent 4 years on Oahu, Hawaii. Moving back to the Land of Ice and Snow wasn't my first choice. That's why Mrs and I decided to stay in Virginia instead of "going home" after I retired.

ROfl, nope off to boot camp. Yeah i know about the snow. born and rasied Colorado. so yeah, lucky me im used to the snow and love it. but i gotta shovel it...ugh. However, my trainging wont be normal. i am in Special Forces. ... fun times training for that trust me. and part of my training is swimming hardcore. ... ice, snow, water? I can't wait! Brie, unless things have really changed drastically, the SEALS are still an all male outfit. We are home to 3 Teams here at Little Creek Amphib Base, the Teams getting females would be very big news here. And they (to my knowledge) don't like to take kids right out of Boot. So what is it you are getting yourself into? You really have me puzzled.

Ya'll ever see the navy commercial where they jump outta the heli? that will be me. its called special forces, included in that branch. in boot we are taken away for our special training by Navy Seals that are based at boot.... still confuseD?

I'm confused.
Air Rescue is a dangerous and extremely important mission but it's not the same as special forces.
I sure hope some slick-tongued recruiter hasn't sold you a bill of goods.

Seals are part of the SF community but unless I'm mistaken, rescue swimmers are not. They are seperate. Keep in mind I'm Army but I know the Coasties have rescue swimmers and the Air Force has ParaRescue. If you are talking about Aircraft Crewman, that's a whole different story.

Yep, because for as long as I've been associated with the "Canoe Club" no enlisted gets pulled from Recruit Training, even special cases like the kids who go to the Ceremonial Guard in DC. They screen their candidates at Boot but the recruit MUST finish. I know this from personal experience, having to work with a couple of Chiefs who would come down from DC to do the screening and selection. We even had the new Assistant Director for The Navy Band come through, direct promotion to Chief (E-7) because of the special position, but first he had to finish Boot in a rifle company. The day after he graduated my Chief, his Company Commander and a bunch of others to him over to the Chief's Club for his Initiation. But he had to finish Boot first. I think your case may be similar, SCREENING in Boot but finish Boot before anything else. Some of the "behind the scenes" processing for each new entry requires it. Sorry Brie, but either you misunderstood or someone sold you a bill of goods I'm thinking. I hate to say it, but some Recruiters short of their monthly quota have been known to say or promise anything. Unless it's in your enlistment contract...

I had the same feeling Sailor. Army is the same way, regardless of where you are going you gotta do basic first. Basic isn't just training, to some extent it's a screening process also to weed out those few who just aren't cut out for military service. Another reason Clinton is se despised by the military, his policies reduced that screening process...we can't hurt someones feeling now can we?
One of the things that got me through basic is think of it as a game. A game where you are on a team, you help your team mates and it helps you. The people that have the hardest time are the ones who only think of themselves.

She graduated from Army boot at FT Jackson last Friday and starts AIT at FT Gordon GA tomorrow. It may be a while before I see her though, my chemo schedule will keep me from going to see her when she goes home on a 96 for July 4th. You'll be pleased to note though (as I was) that the Army still values marksmanship in Boot. Little Brook outshot everyone else in her unit. Her Grampa, my Dad, taught us all how to shoot as kids and I guess the learning held. He'd be proud of her. I am and so is her Mom, my sister. She's National Guard though, not Regular Army. Roger that. "There's no "I" in "Team." Some folks never learn that lesson.

I don't gotta do "basic". We call it "Leadership Development Advanced Camp". It's a mere thirty days. After two years of Army ROTC -- I can see why butter bars are so disliked. Though I've learned a few basics --- some marksmanship, individual and unit tactics, briefings, even MOUT. But nothing in-depth unfortunately.

Sailor, they are giving the new recruites more tactical training due to lessons learned in the war. It's the first stuff they cut in peace time that gets soldiers killed when the next war happens. Afterthe 517th Maintenance Company got shot up the powers that be realised they had screwed up and cut back on BS in basic and increased the tactics stuff.
AP, I hope you listen to your NCOs...If you don't, we will destroy you...Muuuuaaaaaahahahahhahahaha!!!!!
Actually, if a butter bar gets a big head or won't listen to me he's screwed cuz I will set him up for failure. Once he learns I'll help him out.

I don't gotta do "basic". We call it "Leadership Development Advanced Camp". It's a mere thirty days. And WE call it Officers Knife and Fork School. ;D AP, like I advised FF a while back - once you get to your unit latch on to your senior NCO and pay close attention to whatever he or she tries to teach you because like it or not, you know LESS about real soldiering than most of the privates putatively under your command. SFC is absolfreekinglutely correct.
