Well, I'm looking for a home defense pistol and have always wanted a 1911 in .45 Auto. It's a weapon I'm familiar with, down to it's inner workings.
Lately, i've become interested in the Glock 22/23 series in .40 S&W. While I like the 1911, it's size and shape would make it difficult (and intimidating) for Mrs. 101 to use. The more ergonomic "hand" of the Glock might be better suited to her, as might the simplicity of it's double action only design.
Decisions, decisions...

I've never owned a double-action automatic.
I understand you can have the Glock's DA trigger modified to 3 lbs from the factory 5 lb. pull.
Any thoughts?

Well considering I'm already used to the 5lb. pull, I would be prefer it. But a 3 lb. pull may be better if you want the gun to be easier to fire. Either way, you can't go wrong with the Glock.

Well, I put $300 on a Glock 23 today.
Still have to wait until after Thanksgiving to pick it up because of the 10 day waiting period here in the Peoples Republic of California.
I think it'll be a good weapon to teach Mrs 101 to shoot with.
I'll probably pick up a .22 conversion just to get her used to it, then switch her up to the .40 S&W.

New Jersey is a blue state but even here you would be able to walk in, have a 5 minute backround check, and walk out with your Glock 23.

Well, I picked up the Glock today.
Too late to take it to the range.
Can't wait to see how it shoots.

Well, I shot 50 rds through it today at the 7yard mark.
The first mag group was all over the target
The second and third pulled in tighter.
The fourth and fifth put 8 rds in the 10 ring and two each in the 9 just outside.
Not bad for someone who hasn't fired a handgun in 35 years.
I think the groups will continue to tighten as I get used to the weapon.
The one thing I don't like is the trigger guard whacks the middle knuckle on the middle finger of my right hand. It's not painful but a little uncomfortable and it could lead to a flinch If I'm not able to adjust my grip accordingly.
I wish I'd had more time and more ammo as the action will take a little getting used to. A little more recoil than I expected but not objectionable. I may want to pick up a .22 conversion unit before attempting to teach Mrs. 101 to shoot it.

I was also slightly surprised at the recoil 101. It's definitely a very powerful firearm. No doubt that the more you fire it, the more comfortable you'll be with it. My suggestion would be to move your right middle finger below the trigger. While a .22 conversion is probably good in your situation, I would prefer more stopping power.

Yeah the .22 is definitely for training purposes only.
The recoil reminds me of my old Ruger .357 mag. Same kind of snap too. The light frame, I think.
Not quite as loud a bang though.

Yah, the lighter frame means your hand has to absorb more of the recoil.
Wife has a steel frame .38 special snubbie by Taurus, and for a while I had a S&W .38 special snubbie (aluminum frame,) a whole lot lighter. Firing the same load from the Smith as the Taurus hit my hand a lot harder than the heavier Taurus, actually felt it harder than the 1911. Both of us prefer the Taurus to the lighter Smith so it was no sacrifice to let it go.
Speaking of range time, it's past time for Mrs and I to hit the range again though lately it's been real crowded there, must be something coming up - lots of really physically fit dudes with short haircuts and very well kept up weapons (long and short guns) buying and burning lots of ammo. Tried to buy 2 extra mags for the 1911 but they were sold out (that's a first.) I guess that will have to wait until after I'm fully back in commission. *sigh*

Glock 23 right now. We take it to the range maybe twice a month and I remember the first time I fired it. I almost dropped the damn mini-cannon.

I just got a 23. That little fucker is deceiving. I think Matt nailed it, it's a mini-cannon. Surprised me at first.

Mini cannon is about right.
I'd hate to be on the other end of it.
I've ordered a Hogue slip-on grip that might improve the comfort a tad.
I'll let you know when I've tested it out.
