The ex-USS ORISKANY (CV/CVA-34) was towed from her Pensacola FL berth to her "final resting place" off the Florida coast near Pensacola where she has become the largest ship deliberately sunk as part of an artificial reef program. She was sunk upright and the top of her "island" superstructure lies within 60 feet of the surface with her flight and hanger decks within reach of experienced scuba divers. www.navsource.org/archives/02/34.htmwww.hazegray.org/danfs/carriers/cv34.htmThe Navy already has photos on their website and CNN has video of the sinking included in some footage of an interview with Senator McCain. I thought he was on the U.S.S. Forest Fire... Now THAT is fucking hilarious (now that it's so far back). I didn't think it was so funny at the time though.

And to think, McCain could have been one to give his life for his country. Kinda like Mary Jo...

"Sinking?"
Hehe ... that's pretty damn funny!
By the way: I remember being shown file footage of the U.S.S "Forrest Fire" during Navy bootcamp; it was shown to all of us as an effort to drive home the need for effective safety and firefighting on the ship.

I thought he was on the U.S.S. Forest Fire... Nah, his last takeoff was from the "O Boat." He did fly from the "Zippo" on a previous cruise. In one of the films of the fire you can see him climbing out of the cockpit of his plane and walk out along the refueling boom and jump to get clear of the flames before HIS ordinance cooked off.

That film was a staple of every Navy firefighting and damage control class I ever attended. I'm not certain (maybe Battleborn knows) if its still being used. I do know that I saw it all 3 times I had to go through the Shipboard Basic Firefighting class here in Norfolk.

Yeah, I have seen the film myself, but the details get a little fuzzy when you get to be my age. ;D

Good greif what a rusted hunk. I was going to ask why we couldn't scrape it and use the steel, but after seeing the pics I think the thought of all those tetnis shots would make the reef idea a better option.
