July 31st Trade Deadline Talk:

The only major MLB news today is the talk bubbling under the surface about potential trades to be made before the July 31st deadline this year and whether or not a second Wild Card team in the 2012 playoffs is depressing the energy to make any changes.

Bigger gossip surrounds Brett Gardner's continued stay on the DL and speculation as to whether or not Yankees' Central will seek to acquire the equally energetic OF Shane Victorino from the Phillies.

In the guessing game over the immediate futures of MLB starting pitchers, there's been talk for weeks of Ryan Dempster's longevity or lack thereof with the Cubs and regarding whether the Mariners' King Felix Hernandez will finally sail outta Seattle.

Merry Christmas on the A's sweep of the Yanks yesterday, DD!

These were hard fought games that Oakland certainly deserved to win.

Right now, Oakland stands in third place in the AL West at 5.5 gb of Texas, but is tied with the Angels and Baltimore for tops in the AL Wild Card standings.

It's looking like Billy Beane and Oakland Central are on the right track to get y'all in a position to grab the brass ring in this half of the season.

Based on their performance this past weekend, I sincerely hope I'll be wishing you and your Athletics a very merry "Welcome to the MLB Playoffs" come September!

Interestingly, recalling Beane's turning down a multi-million dollar deal to manage the Red Sox and the public's enduring mystification over why he did so, it rocked my world to learn yesterday that Seattle OF, Ichiro Suzuki, another fabled "underachiever" for remaining on a losing team despite unarguably brilliant talent in his field of endeavor, has left the Mariners to become a Yankee.

On the day a Yanks v. Mariners series was to begin in Seattle, no less.

"Eeeeeecheero" hit his first single for his new team in a 4-1 NYY victory after delivering a gracious and moving all-around bow of respect and farewell to his cheering fans in the stadium.

As for Bobby Valentine, perhaps Boston Central was looking for a more passionate counterpoint to the pulse-less, reputedly drug-addled Terry Francona. ;D

You'll see this happening in politics sometimes where a replacement for a wackadoodle predecessor is elected because the newbie's reputation is untainted - whether or not the successor has the ability to deliver the goods expected.

Valentine is seemingly not a good fit for this Red Sox team as configured.

Depending on who, if anyone, goes between now and the end of the season - whether more key players or Valentine - will arguably show what was behind the choice to hire him in the first place, as well as the direction the owners have in mind going forward.
