"Chickengate" - Frank Francisco, Mets Closer v. Yanks

Like the socially awkward guy with the uneasy laugh who's a veritable stock character at any gathering of people of any age these days, a closer for the Mets has deemed the Yankees to be "chickens", but he refuses to explain or provide a definition of what is meant by this epithet.

No wonder such types tend generally to be considered dweebs, dorks, twerps and/or nerds. It is a wonder, though, given their propensity to utter their pique at such high dudgeon, that this sort hasn't yet claimed equal protection rights under the Constitution.

For the time being -- at least.

Needless to say, all concerned - including a Mets' player named "Byrdak" - are making great sport of this latest of handmade controversies - to which I'll add that a hurler for the Tribe is claiming that "pine tar" use by pitchers that led to Joel Peralta's 8 game suspension (that he's not appealing) is widespread in MLB.

This sounds like the early talk that led to exposure of performance enhancing drugs in baseball, although pine tar is freely available at any ballpark and not likely to be banned ever, lest unhappy fans bashed by flying bats refuse, henceforth, to buy tickets.

Frank Francisco: Yanks 'chickens'

NEW YORK -- Mets closer Frank Francisco showed no fear in taking a swipe at his Bronx counterparts, calling the Yankees "chickens" on the eve of their weekend matchup.

"I can't wait to strike out those chickens," Francisco told the New York Post. "I want to strike out the side against them. I've done it before."

Francisco offered no elaboration for the swipe, then told the newspaper, "I think I've said too much already."

Francisco did get to face the Yankees on Friday night but didn't strike out the side. Instead, he allowed a one-out walk and single before retiring the final two batters, including a strikeout of Curtis Granderson, to preserve's the Mets' 6-4 series-opening win.

After the comments came out, Mets relief pitcher Tim Byrdak apparently decided to have some fun. Byrdak revealed via Twitter that he bought a live chicken in Chinatown. He then shared video of the bird inside the Mets' clubhouse at Citi Field on Friday. He confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com the authenticity of his practical joke.

Of course, Byrdak now needs to find a home for the chicken.

"Does anyone live on a farm that could take a chicken off my hands?" Byrdak pleaded. "Don't want to see him get whacked. Please help."

Francisco's comment to the Post was rather odd. There was no apparent animosity when the Yankees slugged eight home runs in a three-game sweep of the Mets in the Bronx two weekends ago.

On Friday, Francisco said he wasn't aware of the stir he created until he arrived at Citi Field and his teammates greeted him with a rendition of the "Chicken Dance." Francisco then found a copy of the Post, with the photoshopped cover image of Derek Jeter's head on a chicken on his locker chair.

Francisco said he was not trying to ruffle feathers but added the Yankees complain too much.

"I make a simple comment, just that they complain a lot -- for every call, for everything," he said. "I thought it was funny. I didn't expect to make a big deal."

Francisco doesn't have much to chirp about this season. He narrowly converted his 17th save Wednesday as the Mets swept the Orioles, loading the bases and then walking in a run before preserving a 4-3 win.

The Yankees' reaction to the "chicken" comments? No harm, no fowl.

"What kind of chickens?" Alex Rodriguez asked. "Organic chickens? Rotisserie chickens? I like chickens." Then he added, "In all seriousness, you're not going to get anything out of me on this."

The only Yankee who seemed to take offense to Chickengate was Nick Swisher.

"I don't even know this dude and I don't think he knows any of us," Swisher said. "Those are some big words."

It is reported via a link to the ESPN.com article below that Frank Francisco, the Mets closer who called the Yanks "chickens" without saying why, is suffering from a pulled left oblique incurred when closing out Friday night's victory over the Bombers.

Also, that Tim Byrdak, another Mets hurler, who bought a chicken to commemorate this awkward attempt at humor, is still looking for a home for the hapless pullet, named "Little Jerry Seinfeld" after Kramer's cockfighter in the sitcom.

There is no word whether the bird was used for voodoo rituals to punish Francisco or whether it administered such a curse by itself.

However, Byrdak complained that, while posting pleas for help on the computer in an effort to locate a lifelong sanctuary for Little JS, snarky internet types told him they'd like to see it in a KFC bucket delivered to their houses.

I'm shocked. Shocked at the insensitivity.

Hi again everybody! It seems like only 12 days ago that my laptop crashed from, among other travails, a case of severe "systems overload" - oh wait, it was 12 days ago - but everything's fixed now and we can now move on to the second half of the MLB season - the one that really counts.


NL 8 - AL 0 - SF's Melky Cabrera Chosen All Star Game MVP

But, first, congrats are in order for the NL contingent of our YFT roster for kicking AL arse big time in an 8-0 shutout in this year's All Star Game: Rem16 and her Cubs, SFV and his G-Men, the Philadelphia Phillies and LW and her Rockies.

And needless to say, after wishing the Giants' Melky Cabrera well as an All Star in his own right this year, I'm wildly happy that he won the game's MVP kudos as well.

It's always a thrill for those who truly love baseball to watch a young kid brought up from the minors work toward achieving his full potential in the following years.

The road to all that has been a bit rockier for the "Melkman", to be sure. But, he had touched by God talent to nurture him through those middlin' times, now full flower emergent on MLB's biggest stage short of the World Series where Melky won a ring with the Yanks in 2009.
