Big MLB news today - with additional coverage available via the news links posted further below - is that Yankees' Star Closer, Mariano "Mo" Rivera, has scheduled surgery on his ailing right knee for this coming Tuesday, June 12th.

And, that Boston's Ace Starter, Daisuke "Dice-K" Matsuzaka, will make his long awaited return to the hill this Saturday, June 9th, in the Red Sox' Interleague matchup versus the Nationals.

Last night's win over Atlanta by the Yankees was powered by A-Rod's 23rd grand slam, a feat placing him in a tie for first place all time with the late Yanks' legend, Lou Gehrig.

This was also A-Rod's 10th HR of the season and his 639th overall. He remains in 5th place on the All Time list behind the great Willie Mays in 4th with 660.

World Baseball Classic - 2013

In MLB news, as Father's Day Weekend of 2012 gets underway, those of you who love the World Baseball Classic, or "Baseball's Olympics", as much as I do will really enjoy that there is a very strong likelihood that former Yankees' Skipper, Joe Torre, will coach Team USA in the 2013 event.

For those of you unfamiliar with the WBC, it was inaugurated in the off-season in 2006, with Japan the winner, and played again in 2009, with Japan again being the Champion.

It took only one of those squibs flashed during a Yankees' game last week announcing that Manny had gone 0 for 5 in a minor league game that got me wondering if the very smart Billy Beane might not be rethinking this highly-hyped reclamation project of his.

It's surprising to me that Manny Ramirez, a drama fueled attention hog if there ever was one, truly came to this decision all on his own in a bout of intellectual honesty that would do Geo. Washington proud.

But, giving an expression that's coming to the fore more and more often these days in life, love, looting and baseball: "Hey. You never know!"

Peralta Pine Tar Incident

Yup. Plus ca change. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Rays reliever, Joel Peralta, was ejected after Davey Johnson, his former Skipper when he pitched for the Nats, dimed him out for using pine tar on his glove in last night's 5-4 defeat of the Gnats by the Rays.

The Umps inspected and walked off the field with the glove, and Peralta went to the club house.

As the reliever walked off the field, he tipped his cap to the Nationals dugout.

"Good for them," Peralta said. "They still lose the game."

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon was clearly upset with the umpires on the field, and afterward he called Johnson "cowardly" for requesting the check of the reliever who pitched for the Nationals in 2010.

"Insider trading, man. It's bush," Maddon said. "It's bogus. That's way too easy, right there." . . .
